Spirit of ‘77: It’s spacious, the food is great, the bar is extensive, and there’s free pop-a-shot basketball.

You cannot experience Portland and not try Salt & Straw. They are self-described as a “Farm-to-Cone” ice cream shop, with their handmade ice cream produced in small batches using local, sustainable and organic ingredients. Consistently above and beyond the norm, this ice cream shop offers amazing ice cream flavors, some of which are quite unusual and all of which are high-quality and delicious.

Brasserie Montmartre offers the bistro-vibe complete with a great wine list, delicious French-inspired dishes and a beautiful interior. Located walking distance from Pioneer square, it’s a great place to grab Saturday lunch or post-office (or post-shopping!) happy hour drinks and snacks.

Carafe is a French bistro conveniently located in downtown Portland, They provide authentic French fare with Northwest flavors and seasonally inspired ingredients, spectacular service and expert wine pairings. Another understated but great aspect of the location is free valet parking and ticket validation. Up to two hours in a downtown garage for free with your meal: unbeatable. And the food? Unreal. So why go there now? Carafe was recently purchased by a Portland restaurant group and will be closed for transition starting the 2nd of June. You must try their food before ownership changes!

Perhaps you’ve heard of the Slow Food movement, perhaps you haven’t. It began in Italy as a response and reaction to the rise of fast food, supermarkets and large scale processed food. This movement promotes food consumption and production based on the simple principles of good, clean, fair and local products.

Andina is a delicious restaurant and a great place to enjoy a nice lunch out or a special dinner. The novo-andean cuisine offers a spectacular glimpse into what peruvian food has to offer.

Southern food in Portland? Is it possible? Anything is possible. Great southern food is a different question, entirely. And that comes down to a matter of opinion and depends on what you’re looking for.

On any given midday in downtown Portland, the rich wafting smells of lunch service fill the streets, especially surrounding the foodcart “pods” housed in converted parking lots. My favorite pod, hands down, takes up an entire city block, sitting between SW 9th and 10th, and SW Alder and SW Washington. This pod is filled with amazing food carts- succulent barbeque pulled pork, “eurotrash” sandwiches and an italian food cart owned by a Portland Timber player.
