Portland in Pictures: Portland Bridges

Portland has some amazing bridges that give the city its unique mark and personality.  The most famous of which is the Hawthorne bridge spanning across the Willamette River connecting Madison Street and Hawthorne Boulevard.  It is one of the most prominent landmarks in Portland, and can be seen in nearly every skyline and cityscape that is taken of the city.

Stretching over 1,300 feet, the Hawthorne bridge sees over 4,500 bicyclists each day as well as 750 TriMet buses, and over 30,000 cars cross the bridge.  The bridge will be celebrating its centennial in 2010 (when it first opened), and it is currently the oldest vertical lift bridge in operation in the United States.
